I have wanted to offer a photo tour to Costa Rica ever since my first visit there in 2004.  Over the years we have traveled to some amazing parts of Costa Rica, including Manuel Antonio National Park, Arenal Volcano area, Peace Lodge with its waterfalls, a couple of different cloud forests and a couple of trips to the Guanacaste region to name a few.  Nothing compared to what we found on our most recent trip to the Osa Peninsula.  We were blown away by the biodiversity and great photo opportunities.    Our research has paid off and I am super excited to share this Costa Rica photo tour with you.  Get your camera ready to take tons of photos!

  • All Inclusive

9 Days and 8 nights including lodging, air transportation from San Jose, Costa Rica to Puerto Jimenez, excursions, and meals!

  • Amazing and Diverse Wildlife

I have friends who offer birding photo tours to Costa Rica, but I wanted to offer something different, with more biological variety. Well, I saw more birds and mammals on my scouting trip to the Osa than all my other Costa Rica trips combined! All of the photos you see in the slide show were taken on my recent scouting trip to the Osa Peninsula! The other thing with a wild, remote place like the Osa, is that there is a chance to see something very rare. My guides all had stories of the times they saw pumas, ocelots, or jaguar. Certainly those chances are rare, but they happen.

  • Comfortable Lodging

While on the Osa Peninsula we will be staying at the brand new hotel Botanika. After a full day of exploring and photography you will return to your very comfortable and air conditioned room. Having air conditioning at the end of each day was invaluable. Most places on the Osa Peninsula don’t have this luxury.

  • Pricing

Price 9 days/8 nights $5,599 per person (based on double occupancy) $6,599 single occupancy

On previous trips to Costa Rica we kept hearing how wonderful the Osa Peninsula was, so we knew we had to make a trip there to see for ourselves.  This fall we did a scouting trip to the Osa Peninsula, and wow, everyone was right!  No wonder National Geographic called the Osa Peninsula “the most biologically intense place on earth,”  We saw lots of monkeys every day, and all four species on two days.  Sloths, anteaters, coati and many more mammals.  Here we found many of the most colorful birds, including macaws, toucans, trogon, parrots and so many more.  We had scarlet macaws every day at the resort!  Plus, colorful frogs and snakes, and amazing landscapes.
Our plan was to include the Osa Peninsula along with one or two other  locations.  However, traveling around Costa Rica can be time consuming, we will be flying to the Osa Peninsula on this trip.  And once we spent time on the Osa we decided, why take the time to see other places when there is so much to see and do right on the Osa.  We ended up changing our plans - this is why scouting trips are so important.
The timing of the trip, I believe, is perfect.  You may hear that Jan-Mar is the best time to visit Costa Rica.  If your plans are to hang on the beach sipping umbrella drinks than this would be the ideal time.  However, for photography this is not a great time. The sun is harsh for photography and the animals bed down in the heat.  The dry season begins in December, and brings with it hot, clear weather, which makes photography challenging and really cuts down on wildlife activity.  However, the wet season also brings its own unique challenges as we learned the hard way one year with an October visit.  I timed this trip during the transition between seasons, so we may have some rain in the late afternoon, but will also benefit from the cooler weather and clouds.   Of course, you can have weather challenges any time of year.
Highlights of our photo tour include:
  • A couple days of safari were we should see amazing birds, all 4 species of monkey and sloths, to name just a few of the wildlife opportunities.
  • A day on a farm with a reptile handler for close-up photo opportunities with frogs and snakes.
  • Visit to a Sloth garden.
  • Trip on the Sierpe River
