2020 Katmai Bears Photo Tour

New in 2020!

Normally our trips are sold out a year in advance. 2020 was no exception, however due to concerns around Covid-19 we have had some guests cancel. This has left us with unexpected openings. If travel is something you are comfortable with and you are looking to get out we have some great opportunities available.

As of June 5th the 14 day mandatory quarantine has been lifted. Travelers coming from out of state will be required to have a Covid test within 72 hours of departing to Alaska and show their negative test results upon arrival. If you don't have test results you must take a test at the airport or serve the 14 day quarantine. We support this plan and think it gives travelers an extra level of comfort. Alaska itself has such a low infection rate and knowing your fellow travelers tested negative is reassuring.

One big advantage to traveling to Katmai this season is the area should be practically empty. Most day flight sightseeing operators will be closed due to lack of cruise ship passengers. This should make for some great bear viewing and photo opportunities. We will be there for prime salmon/bear fishing season!

  • All Inclusive

8 Days and 7 nights including 6 nights aboard an 80′ charter vessel, one night hotel in Kodiak, meals, shore excursions and even wine! Our route will take us from Kodiak to Katmai National Park and back to Kodiak.

  • Amazing Brown Bears

See Brown Bears up close as they fish for salmon. The timing of this trip should be perfect for capturing photos of bears catching salmon.

  • Comfortable Lodging

While this vessel was designed to sleep 16 guests, I am limiting this trip to just 8 guests to allow for personal space and reduce our impact. Shore excursions will be aboard a custom built 20′ landing craft.

  • Price

8 days/7 nights $7,750 (based on double occupancy) Single supplement is not available aboard the boat. If traveling single you will be roomed with a same sex occupant.

  • August 7-14, 2020

  • Due to cancellations 2 Spaces Available
    1 male and 1 female
If you are a couple you would be in separate cabins.

This photo tour will visit some of the best bear viewing bays in Katmai National Park. We will be aboard an 80′ expedition/research vessel who, in recent years, has been doing research work for the park service in Katmai. While designed to accommodate 16 guests, I am limiting this tour to just 8 guests, increasing personal space and reducing our impact.

While motoring to the Katmai coast we will have the opportunity to see and photograph a wide variety of sea birds and marine wildlife. At one point we will pass through a passage known for its many minke, fin and humpback whales, at times all three have been seen feeding at the same time! Another place we will pass by has rafts of approachable sea otters sometimes numbering in the hundreds. These same productive waters are also home to horned and tufted puffin, plus rhinoceros and parakeet auklets to name just a few of the possible birds.

But the highlight of this trip will be the time we spend in Katmai National Park photographing brown bears. The timing of this trip should be perfect for capturing photos of bears catching salmon as our timing puts us in the middle of the salmon run. The prospect of seeing wolf fishing for salmon is not out of the question. We typically will cross between Kodiak Island and Katmai during the night maximizing our daylight hours (same on the way back). This means we will awake to the sight of world famous Geographic Harbor and its many brown bears.

Along with Geographic Harbor, and depending on the activity of the bears, we may also visit Hallo Bay and/or Kukak Bay. A lot will depend on recent activity and scouting reports, but with a boat we have maximum flexibility for finding the best bear viewing. Trips to shore will be made aboard a custom built 20′ landing craft. We will spend a great deal of our time on shore with the bears.

Food aboard the ship will be top-notch and at least two of the dinners feature locally caught seafood.

So many great photo opportunities await you on this trip!
